Round vs Rectangular Tables: Which Is Better for Your Event?

Round or rectangular tables? It’s one of those event planning decisions that seems SO simple until you’re actually trying to figure out your layout.

The good news is there really isn’t a wrong answer here! Round and rectangular tables both have their pros and cons, and the better choice depends on your event, guest count, space and the look you’re going for.

And you don’t necessarily have to choose one or the other. Some of our favorite event layouts use both!

Round Tables: Pros + Cons

Round tables are probably what most people immediately picture when they think about a traditional seated event. Because guests are facing one another, rounds naturally make conversation easier and can create a really social feel. They also work beautifully in open spaces, ballrooms and tents.

Pros of Round Tables

• Great for conversation
• Classic look for seated events
• Work well in open event spaces
• Create a balanced layout throughout a room or tent
• Guests can easily see and interact with others at their table

Cons of Round Tables

• Sometimes require more floor space
• Can be harder to arrange in long, narrow or irregular spaces
• Don’t sit flush against walls or connect together
• May not be the most efficient option when you’re trying to maximize seating in a tight space

We love round tables when conversation is a priority. Everyone at the table feels like they’re sitting together, which works especially well for dinners, fundraisers, galas, weddings and other social events.

Rectangular Tables: Pros + Cons

Rectangular tables — which you’ll also hear us call banquet tables — give you a lot of flexibility.

They can be used individually for guest seating, lined up to create long tables, placed along the edge of a space or used for just about every other function you can think of at an event. They’re also generally easier to work into long or narrow spaces.

• Flexible for many different event layouts
• Can be connected to create long banquet-style tables
• Work well in narrow spaces
• Can help maximize seating in certain layouts
• Great for buffets, registration, displays, gifts, food service and more

Cons of Rectangular Tables

• Guests tend to interact most with the people directly beside or across from them
• Very long tables can make conversation more segmented
• Can feel crowded if tables and chairs are placed too close together

Rectangular tables are WORKHORSES at events. Guest seating is only one use for them! We use banquet tables for buffets, catering, registration, raffles, displays, gifts, bars and just about everything in between.

Can You Mix Round + Rectangular Tables?

Absolutely!

You do NOT have to choose one table shape for your entire event. Mixing round and rectangular tables can make a layout more interesting while also helping you make better use of the space you have.

You might use rounds for most of your guest seating with rectangular tables along the perimeter. You could create a few long banquet tables and use rounds throughout the rest of the space. Or your event might use round tables for seated guests and rectangular tables for your buffet, registration, displays or other event needs.

As long as the layout feels intentional, there’s no rule that says everything has to match!

So, Are Round or Rectangular Tables Better for Your Event?

It depends!

If conversation and a classic seated layout are your priority, you may prefer round tables. If you’re working with a narrow space, want long communal tables or need more flexibility, rectangular tables may make more sense.

But don’t choose your tables in a vacuum. Your guest count, room or tent dimensions, dance floor, stage, bar, buffet and everything else going into your event can completely change what works best.

And sometimes, the answer is both!
