The town was originally incorporated in 1655 and was named after Chelmsford, England and has a lot of history for a small area. The Chelmsford militia was played a role in the Battle of Lexington and Concord during the American Revolution and was the home to a school established by Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Part of the Greater Lowell Metropolitan area, Chelmsford is home to over 33,000 residents and Chelmsford High school, which is ranked among the top 500 schools in the nation.
